Why April might be the best time to go skiing

Forget April showers – it’s all about April powder! Having just returned from our End of Season ski trip, we can certainly recommend skiing in April. The VIP SKI team were lucky to enjoy fresh powder, blue skies and practically empty pistes.

Snow, snow and more snow

April is normally the best time to ski if you’re looking for endless sunshine but the weather across the Alps took a sharp turn towards the end of the month. Across the alps, we saw heavy snowfalls and the kind of snowstorms you’d expect if you were skiing in January.

In Val d’Isere we were lucky to be guided by Jean Jacque & Enrico from our ski school partner Oxygene. They knew where to find the best of the fresh powder and even managed to get us above the clouds and into some sunshine.

The snow continued throughout Thursday evening and most of Friday so we couldn’t believe our luck when we woke on Saturday morning to clear blue skies. With temperatures still below freezing the snow conditions were phenomenal. As the resort was so quiet, we hopped onto lifts without queuing and enjoyed practically empty pistes.

Elsewhere in the Alps

It wasn’t just Val d’Isere that saw the best of the snow, many of our other resorts were transformed overnight into a winter wonderland

Aim high

For late season skiing, it’s always best to aim for higher resorts. From Meribel you can access the entire Three Valleys ski area so you’ll never run out of new tracks to ski. In La Plagne, the Paradiski area climbs as high as 3250m and the Arlberg ski area offers visitors to Lech & St Anton plenty of powdery pistes.
